California gov orders minimum wage for state staff

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered that many state workers start receiving minimum wage in the absence of a state budget, according to reports Thursday, though California’s state controller has in the past refused to comply with such orders. In a letter from Schwarzenegger’s Department of Personnel Administration published online by the Sacramento Bee, the governor ordered that employees who are not part of bargaining units that have reached a labor agreement with his office start receiving $7.25 per hour. The governor issued similar instructions to State Controller John Chiang in 2008, though Chiang refused to comply.
