Photronics shuts Shanghai plant, cutting 75 jobs

TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) — Photronics Inc. said Wednesday it would close its manufacturing facility in Shanghai, cutting 75 jobs. The Brookfield, Conn., producer of semiconductor photomasks expects to report this fiscal year an after-tax charge of $10 million to $14 million for the closing, which is designed to cut costs and move the company faster toward break-even. It is retaining nine production facilities, including four within Asia: two in Taiwan and one each in Singapore and South Korea. Photomasks are used to transfer circuit patterns to semiconductor wafers and flat-panel substrates during the production of integrated circuits and flat-panel displays.
