Retail sales lift sector; Pacific Sunwear tumbles

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Retail stocks rose Friday after the Commerce Department reported better-than-expected retail sales in February, giving another piece of evidence that consumer spending is well on the mend. The S&P Retail Index rose 0.3% to 441.21. Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. tumbled 13% while rival Zumiez Inc. dropped 6.1% after the teen retailers’ first-quarter outlooks missed Wall Street expectations. Aeropostale Inc. rose 4.9% after the teen retailer reported better-than-expected quarterly profit and forecast. Women’s clothing retailer Ann Taylor Stores Corp. was up slightly after its fourth-quarter profit topped analysts’ estimates and the company said it has strong momentum into the first quarter.
